On a day when free speech and the entire Bill of Rights -BOR-
hung on a thread
or to be more accurate
at the tip of a pen
a decision that had also been written with pens
by people called, the founders
hung in an eerily precarious situation.
Concerned citizens Occupied the corner of Wilshire and Veterans Avenue in Santa Monica California to draw attention to indefinite detention section -1031- of the annually passed NDAA.
has the very foundations of this nation been at risk
yet it was not only the 1st amendment at risk
most of the bill of rights are at issue in the 2011 NDAA
due process
and a little concept called habeas corpus
yes i know lincoln suspended it during the civil war... are we at civil war? Make relevant arguments!
Remember the 1st amendment?
to never censor speech
hint they put it first cause its important
without it this article is not possible, and specifically without the internet as well.
not that there has not been legitimate threats to that speech by other mechanisms
some personal: self censorship
some social: facebook, twitter, youtube censorship
some institutional: concentration of news media eg: Viacom/News corp/
some legislative: Telecom act of 1996, NDAA, etc
some fascist: lockdown of internet in china/iran -check out S.O.P.A.
PS: Our founding documents were written on hemp paper, yea, google it.
Getting back to holiday songs. Parody is a long protected part of free speech. Wierd Al yankovich, Snoop, elvis and citizens such as the one -name lost somewhere in the paper work, well just call him annon for now- that recreated this classic, are the basis for an entire industry. Outlaw sampling alone and an already shrinking sector -haha just kidding, thats just what the R.I.A.A. PR says- disappears. Billions of dollars stolen -he says sarcastically- from the economy. Cause major record labels pay taxes?
<crowd participation is key... we were pretty good by the third time acapella in that hour- some goofed, lmao- but musical accompaniment/ vehicular solidarity as opposed to assault is always heartening.>
although we know what they meant by
"all men are created equal"
they really did only mean men, and a specific subset @ that
words are powerful huh?
